Hallo Albert,

Quelle:
dolecek.myphorum.de/XBR/read.php?f=1&i=1...&t=14180#reply_14206

(Quelle: dolecek.myphorum.de/XBR/read.php?f=1&i=1...&t=11441#reply_11450)

Hi all,

My XBR (04/1990) has recently been revised and rebuilt, about 2500 km ago. It still uses quite a lot of oil:

0,6 litres in a little under 300 km.

During city trips (ca 15 a trip) it uses the most, it used:

0,4 litres in approximately 50 km.

No blue smoke from the exhaust, no significant leakage from the cillinder (pictures on hennep.arvid.org/pictures/liesmotor ). Engine itself does smell once in a while. Does someone have a clue about what's going on? Why is my bike so hungry for oil?

Thanks in advance.

Grtz from Holland,

Liesbeth

P.S.:
Please excuse me for being so rude and post in English rather that in German. I have trouble expressing myself in German, but I understand the language quite well, so please feel free to reply in German :)

so do i, but there is no improvement, even i express myself in english!
scharf bewegte einzylinder greifen ins ölfass, man sollte sich darüber keine gedanken machen, aber was liesbeth schildert...?
i guess your rebuilder didn't have a clue of how to rebuild the engine properly! maybe you lost a valve stem seal!

Hi Liesbeth
Nice pictures in the snow !
A little oilconsumption is normal but yours is mutch to high.
I have two Xbr,s en they need about 1/4 lit at 1500-2000 km. Your problem looks like worn pistonrings or worn-damaged valveseals, must be seen at the exhaustpipes. Compression high enough? The max speed for full powertype (44hp) must be 150-170 km/h.
Hope you,ve get soon some answers here.

@liesbeth
Ok there are some easy reasons for high oil consumption after revision:
First:
There is a small ankle at the second oil ring the scharp edges must be installed downwards in camshaft direction. If not then it works like a pump. The sign "N" must be installed upside.
The ring ends must be installed with an differrence of 120°

Second:
The rings are not correkt for new piston diameter, this is possible if You buy revision and parts seperate. Problem If You dont know revision diameter You are lost......

Third (but not with Your high oil consumption):
New Camshaftssealings are damaged at mounting.
Tip: Inseart valve, stick a tesa or insolation tape around the fixing ring to prevent damaging of the sealing. Oil everything. Mount it. Tear tesa away.

Thank you all for your replies. I wanted to provide you with the following information:

I am pretty sure I did not lose a valve stem seal: it would have shown through oil combustion. No blue smoke visible at any rpm. Nor with warm, nor with cold engine. Checked that several times.

The compression is high enough. I got no trouble starting with the kickstarter: max. 2 attempts. The bike easily reaches 150 kms per hour and it still has some left at that point (then the problem is me not daring to go much faster ;-) )

Last weekend I made a 350 km trip, and almost no oil seemed to be used. I'll keep an eye on the short trips to be made this week.

Thanks again for your support.
